European Foundation for Democracy

The European Foundation for Democracy (EFD) is a Brussels-based policy institute founded in 2005. It has been working closely with civil society, academic, government and other stakeholders mainly on the prevention of radicalisation which can lead to violent extremism, in all its forms and regardless of the underlying political or politico-religious ideologies. EFD collaborated with the Radicalisation Awareness Network (RAN) established by the European Commission and is a part of its pool of experts. In relation to hybrid threats, EFD has extensive experience in analysing disinformation, misinformation, and conspiracy theories, while also promoting counter-narratives to fight extremist propaganda and Foreign Information and Manipulation Interference (FIMI). Currently, EFD is focusing on the implications of artificial intelligence, exploring its risks but also its opportunities for pre-bunking and debunking anti-EU and anti-democratic narratives.
