Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg (HSU-HH) is one of two universities of the Bundeswehr. The model of the universities is unique, offering a civilian education experience to the armed forces. The university does its own teaching and R&D, serving the academic community, the Bundeswehr, and also addressing emerging transversal issues of security and defence. Participation in EU-HYBNET is operationalised via the Network of Interdisciplinary Conflict Analysis (NIKA), housed by HSU, and which brings together specialists, practitioners and researchers, from across a variety of disciplines, who cooperate to address the strategic challenges faced by Germany. NIKA approaches conflict with a broad understanding and goes beyond traditional conceptualisation of conflict as pertaining only to security and defence.
